Rockstar isn’t being subtle about its expectations for Grand Theft Auto 6. The studio recently described the game as “the largest game launch in history” in a now-edited job listing, and while that sounds like bold marketing fluff, it’s hard to imagine a bigger event in gaming.
The claim popped up in a posting for a lead software engineer, with Rockstar outlining the role as crucial in scaling the infrastructure behind GTA 6’s debut. The lucky hire would work with “some of the most talented people in the industry” to ensure millions of players can jump in without a hitch. The phrasing was quickly pulled from the listing, but not before fans grabbed screenshots and sites like IGN verified the wording.

So what does “largest launch in history” actually mean? Rockstar didn’t clarify whether it’s talking about raw player numbers, revenue, or cultural impact. But whichever way you slice it, GTA 6 is poised to eclipse almost anything else in gaming. Analyst firm Ampere has already floated a $2.7 billion figure for its expected impact on the industry.
And the timing only adds to the hype. It’s been more than a decade since GTA 5 first landed on PS3 and Xbox 360. That game went on to become one of the best-selling titles of all time and a cultural juggernaut, thanks in large part to GTA Online. With GTA 6 finally set for release on May 26, 2026, anticipation has only intensified. The latest trailer confirmed dual protagonists Jason and Lucia, but plenty of details remain hidden, especially about what the next version of GTA Online will look like.
Of course, there’s always the chance Rockstar could shift the date again. But Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick told IGN that the company has a strong record of sticking to release dates once they’re locked in. That should give fans some confidence that next spring really is the moment.
One thing is clear: no other major studio is going to risk launching a big project anywhere near GTA 6. Even Sucker Punch’s Nate Fox admitted his team celebrated when Rockstar delayed the game out of this year, giving Ghost of Yotei space to breathe over the holidays.
Whenever GTA 6 arrives, it won’t just be a game launch. It’ll be an industry-wide event. And Rockstar knows it.
